Jack Fowler and Alfred Knudson

The New York Yankee’s catcher, Yogi Berra, stated, "When you come to a fork in the road, take it." I took Yogi's advice, and made two major changes in the direction of my research during my career. Fowler's research in the fields of tumor blood flow, tumor oxygenation, and fractionated radiation therapy assisted me in changing from the physical science of nuclear engineering to radiation biology. Knudson's revolutionary two-hit theory of cancer formation enabled me to discover the first imprinted tumor suppressor gene, the Insulin like Growth Factor 2 Receptor (IGF2R), propelling me into the field of epigenetics.
